Traditional open flues swept from the fireback up to the pot, with dust sheets down and soot cleared as I go.
Open fires need a different approach to a stove flue, often wider, sometimes with bends or a register plate to work around. I sweep from the fireback right up to the pot, clearing soot as I go rather than pushing it all down at once.
The chimney pot and cowl get a check while I'm up there, since a blocked or damaged pot is a common reason for a smoky fire. Dust sheets protect the hearth and room throughout, and everything's cleared away before I go.
