I sweep the flue by hand as standard, working from the fireplace or stove up through the chimney to clear soot, tar deposits and any debris that's built up since the last clean. For log burners this usually means removing the baffle plate first so I can get right up into the flue, then checking it goes back correctly afterwards.
Where the deposits are heavier or the flue's had a run of solid fuel, I'll use rotary cleaning to get it properly clear rather than just knocking the loose soot down. Everything gets bagged up as I work so there's no mess left on your carpets or hearth, and you get a certificate confirming the sweep's been done.
